Juan Garcia, Charlie Kane claim New England wrestling titles

Charlie Kane of Fairfield-Warde and Juan Garcia of Danbury were crowned among the region’s best wrestlers as they captured New England championships on Saturday in North Andover, Mass.

Wrestling at 138 pounds, Kane defeated Ryan Monteiro of Minnechaug, Mass., 5-2, in the final. He was one of two Warde wrestlers to reach the finals, joining Daniel Ebert at 145 pounds. Ebert lost a battle with Ryan Peters of Timberlane, Mass., in the final, 4-3.

In the 182-pound final, Garcia took a 3-1 decision over Connor Humphries of East Longmeadow, Mass., to claim his New England crown.

Trumbull’s Cross Cannone also reached the tournament finals at 132 pounds, but fell to Dylan LaFountain of Mt. Anthony, Vt., in the final, 4-1.

Mt. Anthony was the tournament’s team champion with 122.5 points, followed in the top three by two Connecticut schools: Newtown with 84 points, and Warde with 69. Danbury scored 51.5 and finished sixth, and Trumbull scored 40 and finished 10th.
