Greenwich Cardinals fly to top of FCIAC boys lacrosse point standings

The Greenwich Cardinals sit atop the FCIAC’s boys lacrosse power point standings as the league heads into the final three weeks of the regular season.

Greenwch, Darien and Brien McMahon are all unbeaten in FCIAC play, with Greenwich leading the pack thanks to 20 extra bonus points over Darien.

Earning the Cardinals the most points are its wins over Ridgefield, 8-7, and New Canaan 11-8. Darien gained its biggest points with wins over New Canaan, 11-10 in overtime, and St. Joseph 18-3. Greenwich will clash with the Blue Wave at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at Darien HS.

Brien McMahon is next in the point standings, trailing the top two spots with fewer bonus points.

The eight teams inside the playoff bubble at the moment also include Ridgefield, New Canaan, Staples, St. Joseph, and Wilton.

The FCIAC uses a power point system to determine the tournament field due to an uneven schedule. Each of the FCIAC’s 16 teams plays 11 official league games

The formula awards 100 points per league win and 10 bonus points for each league win posted by opponents that they’ve beaten.

As an example, Darien defeated New Canaan on Saturday, so Darien receives 160 points — 100 points for the win and 60 bonus points because New Canaan is 6-2 in league play. Darien will also pick up 10 more points for each league victory New Canaan earns during the remainder of the regular season.

The total number of points is then divided by the number of games played, and the average is used in the power point standings.

Power points are used ONLY to determine the eight qualifiers. After the qualifiers are determined, the coaches of the qualifying teams will rank the teams 1-7 (coaches cannot rank their own teams). The votes will be used to determine seeding.
