Peter Ballo, a former multi-sport athlete at Trinity Catholic High School and now the top golfer at Sacred Heart University, recently became the individual champion at the 2014 Northeast Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Ballo snatched medalist honors in dramatic fashion on May 4 at the LPGA International “Jones” course in Daytona, Fla. He shot a 75 in the first round and was tied for 11th place going into the second and final round.

Ballo then fired a sizzling 66 in the second round to pull into a tie with Bryant’s Ryan Tombs as they both had a 3-under-par 141 after 36 holes as the only two of the 45 players who shot under-par. Ballo seized his title on the second hole in the sudden-victory playoff format with an eagle on the par-5 hole.

Ballo’s latest individual championship continued what has been a fantastic season. It was the third consecutive tournament in which Ballo was medalist. He was also the individual champion at the Rhody Invitational and New England Championships.

The redshirt junior, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on June 9, qualified for the NCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championship. He was one of 10 individual golfers selected to play in the NCAA Division I regional May 15-17 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio.

Ballo was an individual state champion in high school when he led Trinity Catholic to the state championship in 2009. He was a team captain for three years and a three-time All-FCIAC selection in golf. He also excelled on the ice rink as he was an All-FCIAC honoree three times in ice hockey.

Ballo, now majoring in sports management, played for two years at St. John’s University before transferring to Sacred Heart University.

He is the son of Mike and Page Ballo and the younger brother of Mike Ballo Jr., all of them excellent golfers as well.
