The Greenwich Cardinals will take on the Staples Wreckers in Westport in an All-FCIAC state quarterfinal game on Friday, and you can listen to the game live on Hersam Acorn Radio starting at 3:30 p.m. The game can be heard at HANRadio.com or on the FCIAC’s main page at FCIAC.net.
Greenwich, which is 13-9, is the No. 21 seed, while Staples, which is 20-5, is the No. 4 seed.
Greenwich toppled the No. 5 Darien Blue Wave 4-1 in the second round on Thursday, the Cardinals’ second win in as many days over a higher-seeded opponent. Greenwich beat the No. 12 seed Warde Mustangs 6-3 on Wednesday.
Lefty Anthony Ferraro was fantastic on Thursday, pitching six innings and holding Darien to just one run on five hits on its own turf. Ferraro walked two, struck out three, and picked off three Wave runners, including one at third base in the fifth inning.
Alex LoParco pitched the seventh and returned all three batters on ground balls to get the save.
Staples, the No. 4 seed with a 20-5 record, has outscored its first two Class LL opponents by a combined score of 14-1. The Wreckers defeated No. 29 Hamden 7-1 on Wednesday, and pitcher Ryan Fitton then fired a four-hit shutout at No. 13 South Windsor as Staples won, 7-0, yesterday.
Ben Casparius had the big hit, a three-run home run to make it a 4-0 game in the second inning, and , for the day, he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs. Nate Panzer also had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Overall, the FCIAC has six teams in the state quarterfinals, including four in Class LL.
