Middlebury’s Matt Milano earns NESCAC football honor

Quarterback Matt Milano of the Middlebury College football team was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Offensive Player of the Week following the Panthers’ 27-7 win at Colby on Sept. 27.

A 2012 graduate of New Canaan High School, Milano, a junior, made his second career start after taking over as the starting QB this season and was 22-of-33 for 290 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

His first TD strike went to Grant Luna for 25 yards and put the Panthers ahead 14-0 with 1:05 remaining in the opening quarter.

After Colby closed the gap to 14-7 early in the second, Milano found Brett Harasimowicz with a five-yard touchdown pass to boost the lead to 14 points with 4:03 to go in the half.

Middlebury kicker Michael Dola added a 33-yard field goal as time expired for a 24-7 halftime lead, and booted a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter for the final points of the game.

For the season, Milano has is 54-of-100 passing for 561 yards, an average of 187 per game. He’s thrown four touchdown passes and has been intercepted twice.

The Panthers are 1-2 to begin the season and will play at Williams College at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11.

Milano holds the NCHS career records in passing yards (6,335), pass completions (487) and pass attempts (807), and also has the top two spots for passing yards in a season with 3,214 in 2010, and 2,980 in 2011.

Middlebury’s football roster features several former FCIAC standouts, including Staples’ wide receiver Brandon Rankowitz, a senior who has caught eight of Milano’s passes for 76 yards.

Norwalk’s Gil Arujo, a junior, is on the Panthers’ defensive line and has 12 solo tackles, 10 assists, two sacks and one forced fumble.

Offensive lineman Joao Rocha, a 2014 graduate of NCHS and a former captain of the Rams, is a freshman on the Middlebury roster.

Also in the freshman ranks are defensive lineman Robert Wood, a 2014 graduate of St. Luke’s, and quarterback Silas Wyper, a 2014 graduate of Darien High School.
