Maryland’s Cabrera named Big 10 field hockey’s Defensive Player of the Week

Greenwich’s Brooke Cabrera, the starting goalie for the University of Maryland field hockey team, was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5.

Cabrera, a redshirt senior, has allowed just one goal against 24 shots during the past four games, and leads the second-ranked Terrapins with four shutouts this fall. She blanked a pair of conference opponents during the past two weeks, including a 6-0 win over Ohio State, and a 2-0 decision over No. 14 Michigan.

Against Ohio State on Oct. 3, Cabrera stopped all four shots she faced before giving way to backup Jill Genovese for the final 8:43.

Two days later, Maryland defeated No. 18 Old Dominion, 3-1, with Cabrera making five saves versus six shots.

For the season, Cabrera has a 1.33 goals against average and a save percentage of .676

Maryland, which is 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten, had a big week in terms of awards, as they swept the conference’s weekly honors. In addition to Cabrera’s award, Katie Gerzabek was named the Offensive Player of the Week, and Miora Putsch was named the Freshman of the Week.

The Terrapins will take on Penn State at College Park, Md., at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, with Penn visiting on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m.

Cabrera is a 2010 graduate of Greenwich High School, where she was a four-year starter in the cage for the Cardinals’ varsity field hockey team. Greenwich won two state championships (2006 and 2009) and an FCIAC title (2006) with Cabrera as the goalie.
