Thursday, March 10

Marcus Fox, Danbury Boys Basketball

Fox scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Danbury Hatters to a 53-44 win over FCIAC foe Brien McMahon in the CIAC Class LL second round on Thursday. No. 2 Danbury will host No. 7 Wilbury Cross in the semifinal at 7 p.m., Tuesday.

Nick Rich, Stamford/Westhill Boys Ice Hockey

Rich had a hat trick to lead the Stamford/Westhill co-op team to a 5-2 over Hall/Southington in the CIAC Div. III quarterfinals on Thursday. No. 5 Stamford/Westhill will face No. 1 NFI in the semis at Ingalls Rink at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday.

Friday, March 11

Eric van der Els, Brien McMahon Track & Field

Van der Els capped an incredible indoor season with a first-place finish and a state record in the 5,000-meter run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory in NYC on Friday. The McMahon senior used a late kick over the final two laps to emerge from a pack of runners and gain the victory in 14:42.41. That broke the old mark of 14:44.16, set back in 2008 by Glastonbury’s Donn Cabral. Van der Els, who earned All-America status, is only the third runner from Connecticut to win the 5K at the Nationals.

Hannah DeBalsi, Staples Track & Field

DeBalsi set a Connecticut state record while finishing fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory in NYC on Friday. DeBalsi’s time of 16:32.26 was less than four seconds out of second place, and she earned All-America status. She broke the old record of 16:51.88, set in 2010 by Glastonbury’s Lindsay Crevoiserat.

Tiana England, Stamford Girls Basketball

Tiana England scored a team-high 25 points as the Stamford Black Knights defeated South Windsor, 66-57, in the CIAC Class LL semifinals at Kennedy High School on Friday. England, a senior, was 6-for-8 from the free throw line and hit one three-point basket. Stamford will play Greenwich for the state championship next weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Abbie Wolf, Greenwich Girls Basketball

Wolf had a double-double to help lead the Greenwich Cardinals into the CIAC Class LL final with a 69-60 win over E.O. Smith in the semis Friday at Sheehan High School. Wolf, a senior, scored 19 points and brought down 19 rebounds, while also going a perfect 7-for-7 on free throws. Greenwich will play Stamford for the state championship next weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Caroline Beneville, Greenwich Girls Basketball

Beneville netted 17 points in the Cardinals’ 69-60 win over E.O. Smith in the CIAC Class LL semifinals Friday night at Sheehan High School. Beneville picked up nine points on three 3-pointers, and also collected five rebounds.

Mike Grace, Fairfield co-op Boys Ice Hockey

Grace collected 35 saves as the Fairfield co-op team defeated Cheshire, 3-1, in the CIAC Div. II Boys Ice Hockey quarterfinals Friday at the Northford Ice Pavilion. Grace allowed only one first period goal, when the Rams fired 19 shots on net. He shut out Cheshire during the final 32:47, as Fairfield scored twice in the second period to get the win. No. 2 Fairfield will play No. 3 North Branford in the semis at Ingalls Rink at 5:30 p.m., Monday.

Saturday, March 12

David Voigt, Darien Boys Ice Hockey

Darien goalie David Voigt registered a shutout as the Blue Wave defeated the St. Joseph Cadets, 6-0, in the CIAC Div. I quarterfinals Saturday at Bennett Rink in West Haven. Voight stopped all 28 shots he faced, while the Wave offense romped with three goals in the first period, one in the second, and two in the third. Darien, the defending state champs, will face Notre Dame-West Haven in Wednesday’s semis at Ingalls Rink.
