FCIAC’s Top Performers, March 14-17

Monday, March 14

Jake Fuss, Fairfield Boys Ice Hockey

Fuss racked up four goals to lead the Fairfield co-op team past Guilford, 5-1, in the CIAC Div. II semifinals Monday night at Ingalls Rink. Fuss scored the Mustangs’ first goal, tying the score at 1-1 midway through the first period. He added two more goals in the second period, as Fairfield built a 4-1 lead, and scored the final tally in the third period.

Owen Emmendorfer, Fairfield Boys Ice Hockey

Emmendorfer had four assists in the Fairfield co-op team’s 5-1 win over Guilford in the Div. II semis.

Tuesday, March 15

Ian Offenberg, Staples/Weston/Shelton Boys Ice Hockey

Offenberg scored the game-winning goal with 4:41 remaining in overtime, as the Staples/Weston/Shelton co-op topped Woodstock Academy, 6-5, in the CIAC DIv. III semifinals Tuesday at Ingalls Rink. Offenberg, a senior, scored during a scramble in front of the net. He also assisted on a goal in regulation.

Christian Compolattaro, Westhill/Stamford Boys Ice Hockey

Compolattaro made 31 saves to help lead the Westhill/Stamford co-op into the CIAC Div. III finals with a 4-1 win over New Fairfield/Immaculate in Monday’s semis at Ingalls Rink. The junior goalie kept his opponents off the scoreboard for the first 40-plus minutes as Westhill/Stamford built a 2-0 lead. NFI scored with 4:19 remaining, but Westhill/Stamford responded 27 seconds later and went on to win.

Nick Rich, Westhill/Stamford Boys Ice Hockey

Rich had a hand in three of Westhill/Stamford’s four goals in a 4-1 win over New Fairfield/Immaculate in the CIAC Div. III semifinals Monday at Ingalls Rink. Rich scored once and had two assists. His goal came with 3:52 remaining and gave Westhill/Stamford a 3-1 lead.

Scott Nesbitt, Danbury Boys Basketball

Nesbitt scored a game-high 22 points as the Hatters topped Wilbur Cross, 73-65, in the CIAC Class LL quarterfinals Tuesday at Danbury High School. Nesbitt, who was 7-of-10 from the free throw line, scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, when the Hatters put the game away by outscoring the Governors, 29-16.

Wednesday, March 16

David Voigt, Darien Boys Ice Hockey

Voigt collected 31 saves as the Blue Wave earned a return trip to the finals with a 4-0 shutout of Notre Dame-West Haven in the CIAC Div. I semifinals Wednesday at Ingalls Rink. It was the second consecutive shutout in the state playoffs for Voight and Darien, who beat St. Joseph 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Jake Kirby, Darien Boys Ice Hockey

Kirby dished out three assists in Darien’s 4-0 victory over Notre Dame-West Haven in the CIAC Div. I semifinals Wednesday at Ingalls Rink. All three of those helpers came during the second period, when the wave turned a 1-0 lead into a four-goal rout.

Edward Rudman, New Canaan Swimming

Rudman, a junior, won four events and had a hand in two meet records as New Canaan won the Class L swimming and diving championship Wednesday at Wesleyan University. Rudman had a Class L-record time of 21.02 in the 50-yard freestyle, and swam the anchor leg for the 200 medley relay team, which also set a meet record in 1:36.26. He won the 100 backstroke in 52.44, and led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, which finished in 1:27.22.

Jack Montesi, Greenwich Swimming

Montesi broke two state records and captured four gold medals as Greenwich won the Class LL championship on Wednesday at Wesleyan University. A senior, Montesi broke his own state mark in the 100-yard butterfly (48.41) and set a new state record in the 100-yard backstroke (48.44). He also led off the winning 200 medley relay (1:33.58) and 400 freestyle relay (3:08.85).

Alex Jahan, Greenwich Swimming

Jahan set a new state record in the 100-yard breaststroke as Greenwich won the Class LL championship on Wednesday at Wesleyan University. The senior’s time of 55.14, broke the old ark of 56.08, set in 2009 by New Canaan’s Christian Higgins. Jahan was also part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:33.58), and won the 200 individual medley (1:52.18).

Kieran Smith, Ridgefield Swimming

Smith set a Class LL record with a time of 1:39.25 in the 200-yard freestyle at Wednesday’s championship meet at Wesleyan. His mark broke the old record of 1:40.59, set in 1999 by Greenwich’s John Waters. Smith was also second in the 500 freestyle, and third with the 200 medley relay.
