FCIAC Scholar-Athletes, September, 2015

Emily Berzolla, Greenwich

This senior captain has been a key contributor as a four-year starter to the success of the strong girls soccer program, which included a conference championship in 2012. Last year Emily led the team in assists and was selected to the All-FCIAC Second Team.

Emily has made Honor Roll every quarter in high school, she has a 5.0 GPA and last year she was one one of the 30 students chosen from high schools across the state as a 2015 Connecticut Governor’s Scholar.

She is a member of the National Honors Society, the National Science Honors Society and the National Spanish Honors Society. During the past year Emily has received the National Spanish Exam Gold Medal, the Harvard Book Award and the 2015 Excellence in Math and Science Award presented by Sikorsky Aircraft and Fairfield University.

Emily also volunteers for several community service organizations, including Art From The Heart and Inspirica. She works as a soccer coach and referee, as well as a math and science tutor.

Liisa Balazs, Stamford

Liisa has maintained a 3.99 unweighted GPA and a 4.5 weighted GPA.

Last year she received an Underclassman Award as a sophomore for a strong girls’ volleyball team and she made FCIAC Honorable Mention.

Lauren Rutledge, Darien

Lauren excels in the classroom and in the pool a a member of the girls swimming and diving team. She and three teammates on the 400-yard freestyle relay team achieved All-American status and she has earned All-FCIAC and All-State kudos every fall for the past three years.

In the middle of her junior year Lauren was inducted into the National Honor Society and as part of that she volunteers three hours of community service each month.

Emma Connolly, Trinity Catholic

This member of the National Honor Society has a 4.35 GPA while taking many AP and Honors classes and she is ranked sixth in her class.

Emma has played for the varsity girls soccer and girls tennis teams since she was a sophomore.

She is also a member of many clubs such as environmental, yearbook, campus ministry, ambassadors and teenage peace works.

Mary Conlon, Trinity Catholic

Mary is captain of the girls tennis team and a recipient of the FCIAC Sportsmanship Award.

She has made Honor Roll and is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Sara DaSilva, Danbury

Christian Trifone, Darien

Christian is an excellent student-athlete and team captain helping the football team have another strong season as the defending FCIAC champion.

Samantha Capellaro, Danbury

Samantha is a fast freestyle sprinter and one of four captains on the girls swimming and diving team.

She works as hard in the classroom as she does in the pool, consistently achieving High Honors, and she is enthused about focusing on physical therapy in college.

Reece Schachne, Staples

Reece has excelled as a student-athlete who has earned many awards and also volunteers for several causes.

The middle hitter for the girls volleyball team leads the offense by averaging 16 kills per match and she is also the top blocker.

Reece was also the Staples High School Student of the Month for September. She has achieved First Honors every semester, she is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a member of the National Honor Society, Chinese National Honor Society and Rho Kappa Society (National Honor Society for Social Studies.

Reece is an executive board member of the Westport Youth Commission, an I-Mentor who leads middle school discussions, a Student Ambassador at Staples High and she was the founder of the Northeast Chapter of STOP SAM.

Timothy Moore, Danbury

This senior captain of Danbury’s dynastic boys cross country program is an excellent student and who has earned All-FCIAC honors in each of the last two years and he helped the Hatters defend their team title this October.

Tim has achieved High Honors throughout his high school career, he is ranked 32nd out of his class of 545 students, he has a 4.16 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society.

He is also a member of Future Business Leaders of America and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Tim also volunteers for several community organizations and is a tutor at Danbury High.

Gabriela Davila, Norwalk

Jack Consolini, Darien

This solid senior distance runner has improved steadily as a student since his freshman year. He has accomplished a higher GPA each year and to raise his overall GPA to 3.5.

He’s been a key contributor to successful cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field teams. Injury curtailed his track seasons when he was a junior but he came back and had some strong performances at the end of the outdoor season and he was voted team captain for the cross country and outdoor track teams as a senior.

Jack is also an accomplished musician. He has been on two trips with the school Orchestra to compete in the Heritage Festival, a worldwide musical competition, and the Orchestra earned a gold medal when he was a freshman and a silver medal when he was a junior.

Joey Ambury, Fairfield Ludlowe

This senior has made Honor Roll every quarter while taking many difficult Honors and Advanced Placement courses, he made Headmaster’s List in his junior year and was also inducted in the National Honor Society that year.

Joey has been a member of the boys cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field teams throughout his career. He received the Coaches’ Award as a sophomore, the Most Improved Award as a junior and he was selected captain of both track teams as a junior.

He also volunteers in his local community and is a member of the Key Club.

Samantha Rossi, Fairfield Ludlowe

Samantha utilized experience and perseverance to improve steadily throughout her high school career as a student and a runner for the girls cross country team.

When she was a junior last year she had a GPA of 3.9 for one marking period and a 3.7 for two other marking periods to elevate her current overall GPA to 3.5. She has made Honor Roll for every marking period since her freshman year.

Samantha is also a vital member of the varsity cross country team who consistently places among the top three or four on her team. She hopes to have a solid senior year and pursue her passion of running in college.

Regan Steed, Fairfield Ludlowe

Regan, who is currently taking four Advanced Placement classes, is an “A” student and AP Scholar who has made the Headmasters List in all marking periods.

She is a member of the National Honor Society along with the Math, Science, Latin and Spanish honor societies in addition to being a recipient of the Silver Medal in the National Latin Exam in 2014 and ’15, the World Language Award for Excellence in Spanish in 2013 and ’15, and the Dartmouth Book Award.

Regan will receive 11 varsity letters as a three-sport varsity athlete by the time she graduates. She was selected to the Girls Lacrosse All-FCIAC Second Team, she was All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in basketball, she has been named captain of both those teams, and she is also a member of the girls’ soccer team.

This Girl Scout also volunteers for several organizations, including the Unified Sports programs at Ludlowe. She is a Ludlowe Leader at her school and a member of the Keystone Club at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club in Southport.

Regan has a verbal commitment to Columbia University with plans of attending in the fall of 2016 and playing lacrosse.
