Alex Ostberg and Hannah DeBalsi have been tearing up area cross country courses throughout the fall season. On Saturday, the pair took it up another level.
Ostberg captured a championship, and DeBalsi took second place in the girls race during the 36th Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Northeast Regionals Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx, N.Y.
Both runners qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals, which will take place in San Diego, Cal., on Dec. 13
Ostberg, a senior at Darien High School, won the boys’ 5,000-meter race in 15:18, finishing 16 seconds ahead of his closest competition. He led from start to finish, adding to his season’s take, which already included FCIAC, State Class, State Open, and New England championships.
Luke Petela of Haddon Township HS in Westmont, N.J., finishing second in 15:34, while Ari Klau of Hall HS in Hartford was third in 15:36.
Ostberg’s Darien teammate, junior Armstrong Noonan, was 12th in 15:48.
In the girls’ 5,000-meter race, Brianna Schwartz of Shaler Arca HS in Pittsburgh took the top spot with a time of 17:36.
DeBalsi, a junior at Staples HS, was second in 17:51, while Emma McMillan of Barrington HS in Barrington, R.I., was third in 17:52.
DeBalsi had won the FCIAC, Class LL, State Open, and New England championships in her four previous races.
