The Danbury Hatters made it an FCIAC three-peat, as they topped the Wilton Warriors, 41-29, in the girls basketball championship game Thursday at Fairfield-Ludlowe High School.

The game was tied 14-14 at halftime before Danbury went up 27-24 after three quarters. That lead was quickly boosted to 12 points at 38-26 and the Hatters won by that same margin.

Danbury (22-1) avenged its only loss of the season with the victory. Wilton (19-4) had beaten the Hatters, 48-43 in the second game of the season, but the Hatters have been unscathed since and Thursday’s win was their 21st in a row.

The Hatters become the third FCIAC girls basketball team to win three straight conference championships. Trinity did it from 2006-08, and Norwalk did it twice in 1981-83 and 1999-2001.

Junior Allie Smith was named the game’s MVP after scoring 11 points and reeling in five rebounds. Rebecca Gartner also had 11 points and Rachel Gartner scored eight.

Erin Cunningham led Wilton with 10 points.

Both teams will begin their drives for state championships next week. Danbury is the No. 1 seed in Class LL and Wilton is No. 6 in Class L

“This was important to us, it was our first goal,” Rachel Gartner told  Hersam Acorn Radio “But, we’ve never won a state championship and that’s what we want to do now. The state tournament is bigger because it’s the whole state. We’ll be ready.”
