Steidl, Vermont Catamounts riding high in America East basketball

Kurt Steidl heads into the postseason with the Vermont Catamounts men’s basketball team in a high note after being named to the America East All-Rookie Team on Friday.

Steidl, a 2013 graduate of Ridgefield High School, is averaging 6.1 points per game this season, and is shooting 41.9 percent from three-point range during the past 10 games.

The Catamounts (21-9) are the 2014 America East regular season champions and have earned the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament with a league mark of 15-1. They’ve also been hot down the stretch and enter the playoffs having 10 straight and 17 of 18 games.

Vermont will face No. 8 New Hampshire in the quarterfinals at Noon, Saturday, March 8, at the University of Albany. The game will be available online at ESPN3.com.

All four quarterfinal games will be held at Albany, including No. 4 4 Albany vs. No. 5 UMBC at 2 p.m.; No. 2 Stony Brook vs. No. 7 Maine at 6 p.m.; and No. 3 Hartford vs. No. 6 Binghamton at 8 p.m.

The semifinals will be held on Sunday, March 9 at the University of Albany, with the championship game scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, on the home court of the highest remaining seed. That game will be aired on ESPN2.

A 6’6” freshman forward, Steidl was a two-time All-State and All-FCIAC First Team selection with the Ridgefield Tigers basketball team in 2012 and 2013.

Steidl has had a huge first season with Vermont, collecting 178 points and 61 rebounds in 29 games. He also leads the team in three-point shooting percentage at 48.6, going 36-of-74 from long-range.

Steidl was named the America East Rookie of the Week after a stellar performance in a 73-61 win over Sonoma State on November 30. Making his first career collegiate start, Steidl racked up 19 points, hitting 6-of-11 baskets and 4-of-6 from three-point range. He also had three rebounds, a block, and a steal.

Against New Hampshire on January 20, Steidl scored 16 points in 19 minutes, going 4-for-4 on three-point attempts as Vermont won 57-40.

He also had 13 points in a 67-64 loss at Stony Brook on January 24.
