Central rallies for state basketball championship; Darien hockey edged by Prep in OT

The Bridgeport Central Hilltoppers scored a dramatic comeback victory to take the Class LL boys basketball title, while the Darien Blue Wave fell just short of a state ice hockey crown in CIAC championships games on Saturday.

On Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, Bridgeport Central appeared headed to the runner-up spot as it trailed Fairfield Prep by 18 at halftime, 47-29.

The Hilltoppers had a different fate in mind, however, as they stormed back and outscored Prep, 28-9, in the third quarter to take a 57-56 lead heading to the fourth. A seesaw final frame ended with Central on top, 76-73, winning the sixth state basketball championship in school history.

Four Hilltoppers had double digits in scoring, including Marcus Blackwell, who netted a team-best 17 points and nine rebounds. Orhan Cecunjamin had 16 points, Tyler Ancrum had 15, and Sha’Quan Bretoux had 12.

The Blue Wave hit the ice at Ingalls Rink earlier in the day and received a tremendous performance from goalie Michael Colon, who racked up 37 saves against 39 shots from Fairfield Prep.

Darien had a 1-0 lead after scoring in the first period and it looked like that Colon and the defense could make that stand up, but Prep’s Dean Lockery scored the equalizer with 6:11 remaining in regulation.

Vincent D’Amore then ended the game 8:41 into overtime, giving the Jesuits a 2-1 win and their 16th state championship, while denying Darien its first state title since 1969.
