A win Wynne situation for Staples and its track star

It has been a career as fabulous as can be.

Staples High School senior Henry Wynne has already secured his legacy as one of the best distance runners in state history. He certainly is the most versatile ever and mostly likely the best ever from the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

Oh, and he’s not done yet.

The FCIAC postseason will hit full stride today with baseball, softball, girls lacrosse, and girls tennis all in action.

The baseball and softball tournaments step to the plate with eight quarterfinal games at the home fields of the top four seeds in each sport.

The Greenwich Cardinals will lead a field of eight strong teams into the postseason, as the FCIAC baseball tournament gets underway Monday, May 20, at 4 p.m.

Greenwich, Ridgefield, New Canaan and St. Joseph are the top four seeds and will host quarterfinal games, while Trumbull, Ludlowe, Danbury and Staples will be the road teams.

The St. Joseph Cadets will lead the FCIAC into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament which is set to begin on Monday at the home fields of the higher seeds. Game times are set for 4 p.m.

Top-ranked Ridgefield leads a group of four FCIAC teams among the top five in the most recent New Haven Register Top 10 Boys Lacrosse Poll that was released Wednesday, May 15.

Five of the eight teams in the upcoming FCIAC Boys Lacrosse Tournament that commences Saturday are in the Top 10 and those five conference teams are all ranked among the top seven.

The Darien Blue Wave finished off a perfect FCIAC regular season earlier this week and will lead the FCIAC into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs.

The Ridgefield Tigers officially took the No. 1 seed, while defending league champion New Canaan, Darien, and Greenwich will round the top four spots in the FCIAC boys lacrosse tournament, which begins with quarterfinal games on Saturday, May 18.

Rivals Darien and New Canaan lead the FCIAC girls lacrosse power point standings as the regular season winds down this week.

Darien, which is unbeaten in league play at 11-0, is in first place with a 142.72 average, while New Canaan, which is 10-1 in league play, is second at 124.54

The rest of the top eight at the moment is, in order, Greenwich, Danbury, Wilton, Ridgefield, Warde, and Staples.

The field has been set for the 2013 FCIAC boys lacrosse tournament, which will begin with quarterfinal games on Saturday.

The Fairfield-Ludlowe Falcons and St. Joseph Cadets sewed up the final two spots in the playoffs with victories on Tuesday. Ludlowe beat town rival Warde, 10-2, while St. Joe's defeated Brien McMahon 14-11 in what were essentially tournament play-in games.

CIAC honors top scholar-athletes for 2012-13

Thirty-four students from FCIAC schools were honored by the CIAC at the 30th annual Connecticut High School Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet, held Sunday, May 5, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

The FCIAC student-athletes represented 17 of the league’s school, and were among the 340 recognized by the CIAC.
