CIAC honors top scholar-athletes for 2012-13

Thirty-four students from FCIAC schools were honored by the CIAC at the 30th annual Connecticut High School Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet, held Sunday, May 5, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

The FCIAC student-athletes represented 17 of the league’s school, and were among the 340 recognized by the CIAC.

 

New Canaan's DeNey, Staples' Wynne named FCIAC Players of the Week

Nathalie DeNey of the New Canaan girls ice hockey team and Henry Wynne of the Staples boys track and field team have been named the MSG Varsity FCIAC Players of the Week for the week ending Saturday, Jan. 19.

Wynne excelled at the 31st Yale Interscholastic Track Classic, held Jan. 18-19 at Coxe Cage in New Haven. The senior Wreckers captured the gold medal in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:54.86. Second place went to Zachary Emrich of North Kingstown, who finished in 1:55.76.

 

Hoops standouts Cody and Livingston earn Player of the Week honors

Two hoops stars from the city of Stamford are the recipients of the MSG Varsity Player of the Week Awards for the week ending Jan. 12.

Sophomore Jeremiah Livingston of the Westhill boys basketball team and senior Ashyla Cody of the unbeaten Stamford girls basketball team both helped their squads post big victories last week.

 

Andrew Read, Alexa Pfohl named FCIAC Players of the Week

Basketball captains Andrew Read of New Canaan and Alexa Pfohl of Trumbull have been named the MSG Varsity FCIAC Players of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5.

Read, a senior, led the New Canaan Rams to their first two victories of the season, including a 51-41 upset of defending FCIAC champion Bassick last Friday night in New Canaan.

 

Steidl, Meyer named MSG Varsity FCIAC Players of the Week

Ridgefield Tiger Kurt Steidl and Wilton Warrior Erica Meyer have been named the winners of the MSG Varsity FCIAC Player of the Week award for their performances during the week of Dec. 13-22.

Both are standout basketball players and have their teams in the thick of the FCIAC playoff races.

Steidl, a senior at Ridgefield High School, scored 90 points in the Tigers’ wins over Darien, Wilton, and Harding, cracking the 30-point mark twice.

He led the Tigers with 37 points, including four three-pointers, in a 79-38 win over Wilton on Thursday, Dec. 20, and scored 30 to go along with 14 rebounds in a 80-54 win over Harding the following day. He also scored 23 in a 63-30 win over Darien on Dec. 18.

Ridgefield lost to St. Joseph on opening night, but has won four straight to move into a tie with Norwalk atop the FCIAC Central Division.

A sophomore at Wilton High School, Meyer led the Warriors with 13 points, and netted the game-winner in a 42-40 victory over rival Ridgefield on Thursday, Dec. 20. Meyer had 13 rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist in the win.

Meyer also hit double digits in scoring with 12 in a 58-39 win over Ludlowe on Dec. 18, adding another eight rebounds and three blocks to the mix. She collected nine points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks in the Warriors’ 60-18 rout of Granby Memorial on Saturday, Dec. 22.

The Warriors have won five of their last six games and are 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the FCIAC.

Kane, D'Alessandro named MSG Varsity's FCIAC players of the week

A pair of city hoops stars are the first 2012-13 winter season recipients of the MSG Varsity FCIAC Player of the Week awards.

Roy Kane of the Norwalk Bears and Megan D’Alessandro of the Westhill Vikings both earned the honor based on their performances during the week of Dec. 10-15.

 

 

Heisman weekend ahead for National finalist Pearsall

Casey Pearsall of Wilton High School is one of 12 National finalists for the 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, and will be honored this weekend in New York City.

Pearsall will take part in the Heisman Memorial Trophy Weekend activities from Friday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Dec. 9. During the Wendy's High School Heisman Award Banquet, two national winners, one male and one female, will be announced on ESPN2.

 

Howsie, Roman-Johnston earn Player of the Week honors

Shaquan Howsie of the Trinity Catholic football team and Lizette Roman-Johnston of the Wilton field hockey team were named the MSG Varsity FCIAC Player of the Week award-winners for the week ending Sept. 22.

The two athletes were featured on MSG Varsity’s SportsDesk on Friday and are profiled on MSGVarsity.com.

Howsie, a senior captain, rushed 24 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns as the Crusaders defeated the New Canaan Rams, 31-28 in overtime, on Saturday, Sept. 22. It was the Crusaders’ first win over New Canaan since 1984. Howsie scored Trinity’s first two TDs on runs of 33 yards and 1 yard to establish the Crusaders’ offense in the early going. The Crusaders are 3-0 this season.

Roman-Johnston, a freshman goalie for Wilton, pitched a shutout at Connecticut’s top-ranked team as the Warriors knocked off Darien 1-0 on Sept. 19. Roman-Johnston collected 13 saves, including several key stops in the final 10 minutes to nail down the victory. She also made two saves in Wilton’s 6-0 blanking of Warde two days later. Wilton is 6-0-0-0 this fall.

Recipients of the FCIAC Player of the Week Award are chosen by a committee consisting of four FCIAC athletic directors, along with sports writers from MSG Varsity and Hersam Acorn Newspapers.

Borea, Frusciante named MSG Varsity FCIAC Players of the Week

Anna Borea of the New Canaan girls soccer team and James Frusciante of the Staples football team have been named this week’s MSG Varsity FCIAC Player of the Week award winners for the week ending Sept. 15.

The two athletes will be featured on MSG Varsity’s SportsDesk on Friday, Sept. 21, and are profiled on MSGVarsity.com.

Borea, a senior co-captain, scored the Rams’ first and last goals as they defeated two-time defending champion Greenwich, 3-1, in the season-opening game on Sept. 12. After Greenwich scored the first goal, Borea netted the equalizer in the 32nd minute, scoring on a free kick from 25 yards out. After younger sister Gabriella Borea made it 2-1 in the second half, Anna Borea nailed down the win with another long-range goal in the 63rd minute.

Frusciante, a senior co-captain, scored three touchdowns as the Staples Wreckers scored 42 points in the second half and defeated the St. Joseph Cadets, 49-28, in the last Friday’s season opener. The game had been tied 7-7 at halftime before the Wreckers outscored the Cadets by 21 points during the third and fourth quarters.

Frusciante scored once on a 70-yard punt return, and also caught TD passes of 14 and 62 yards from QB Jack Massie. He led the Wreckers with seven catches for 122 yards.
