Second-half surge leads Trumbull past Warde

TRUMBULL — Pele would have been proud.

A two-goal Trumbull lead had just been sliced to one and the momentum was on the side of the Warde Mustangs. It was still anyone’s game, a game crucial to the FCIAC standings, but Trumbull’s Skylar Jorge changed everything with a play for the ages.

Stationed at the right side of the field, about 20 yards out and with her back to the goal, Jorge took control the ball and then sent a bicycle kick over her head and it ended up floating just over the outstretched hands of Warde keeper Maura Dougherty, a goal that not only restored the Eagles two-goal cushion but drove Trumbull to an eventual 4-1 win over the Mustangs Tuesday night.

“It was right after they (Warde) scored and I just thought, why not try to hit it and it ended up working,” Jorge said. “I made pretty good contact with the ball and I turned around and saw it going in and I was just so surprised.”

Ridgefield, Staples battle to tie

RIDGEFIELD — As far as regular-season soccer games are concerned, they don’t get much bigger than Tuesday afternoon’s battle between unbeaten Staples and unbeaten Ridgefield.

And as far as scoreless ties go, they don’t get any more entertaining than said clash, which was a rematch of last year’s Class LL state championship match.

Both teams’ senior goalkeepers were flat-out sensational, with Zoe Barnett making seven saves for Staples (9-0-3) and Lauren Castle making five saves for Ridgefield (10-0-1), which has not surrendered a goal this season.

“Every game, for every season that I’ve been here, the goal is to keep the zero,” Castle said, “because if you don’t get scored on, you can’t lose.”

Boys Soccer: Greenwich hands Trumbull 1st loss

TRUMBULL — There were lots of saves for Jimmy Johnson on Thursday night at Trumbull as he and the Greenwich boys soccer team dealt the Eagles their first loss, 1-0.

One stood out: No. 1.

“That first save kind of set the tone,” Johnson said; it took a while but was a beauty on Trumbull’s first extended pressure of the evening.

“You’re not going to get through our defense, and even if you get through our back line, you’re not going to get through me.”
