Dente, Westhill nip Darien on Senior Night

STAMFORD — Westhill celebrated its seniors prior to its contest with Darien, and the party kept right on going through postgame.

The Vikings took a huge step in their quest for a state tournament berth, defeating the Blue Wave 2-1 at home on Tuesday.

“It’s about making states for us, and hopefully we’re pretty close with that win,” Westhill coach Dave Flower said. “So, that’s why they’re so happy. The goal was to make states, and on their Senior Night they’ve done a good job of doing that.”

NORWALK — The connection between McMahon’s Peyton McNamara and Chloe Ortolano was too much for Norwalk to overcome.

Wreckers shut out Falcons

FAIRFIELD — On Sunday, the players and coaches of the Staples boys soccer team gathered to watch a video highlighting the first 60 years of Staples soccer. They watched the historic goals, the historic wins and celebrations and the historic championships.

Now, as the next 60 years of Staples soccer begins, Lefty Penderakis staked his claim to having one of his goals put into the next highlight video.

Penderakis’ 30-yarder from the middle of the field, halfway through the first half, was a bullet of a shot that found its way just under the crossbar and just over the hands of Ludlowe keeper Colin Agosti, an electric goal that sparked the Wreckers to a 2-0 victory over the Falcons in a key FCIAC matchup Monday night at Taft Field.

Danbury boys blank Wilton to remain unbeaten

DANBURY — The unbeaten Danbury High School boys soccer team is determined to lock up the top seed in the upcoming FCIAC playoffs, and the Hatters took another step toward doing just that on Monday.

Joe Mooney had a goal and an assist and Marcelo Diaz and Thiago DeSousa each added a goal half as the Hatters blanked Wilton 3-0. Danbury goalkeeper Matthew Silva didn’t need to make a single save to preserve the shutout, thanks in large part to the Hatters’ almost impenetrable defense.

As the lone undefeated team in the FCIAC, Danbury sits alone atop the standings and has already clinched a spot in the conference playoffs. The top seed — and, theoretically speaking, the most favorable matchups throughout the tournament — is their next goal.

“It was a nice, solid game,” Danbury coach Antony Howard said. “Of course, we have areas we need to improve upon, but we’ve given ourselves a good chance of getting a top-four spot at least, which is what we want.”
