FCIAC Boys Tennis: Staples, Greenwich take top two seeds

The unbeaten Staples Wreckers will lead a field of eight teams into the FCIAC boys tennis tournament, which gets underway with the quarterfinal round on Thursday, May 17.

Here’s the full schedule:

Quarterfinals – Thurs., May 17

No. 8 Wilton (9-7) at No. 1 Staples (16-0), 4 p.m.

No. 7 Ludlowe (9-6) at No. 2 Greenwich (15-1), 4 p.m.

No. 6 Westhill (11-5) at No. 3 Ridgefield (13-3), 4 p.m.

No. 5 New Canaan (13-3) at No. 4 Darien (13-3), 4 p.m.

Semifinals – Monday, May 21

Matches at the two highest remaining seeds, 4 p.m.

Final – Wednesday, May 23

Match will be held at Wilton HS, 4 p.m.

Staples finished the season with a 16-0 record which includes a 4-3 win over Greenwich on May 9. That was Greenwich’s only loss, as the Cardinals finished 15-1 and took the No. 2 seed.

Ridgefield, Darien and New Canaan all finished tied with 13-3 records. The head-to-head tiebreaker could not be used, as Ridgefield defeated Darien, Darien defeated New Canaan, and New Canaan defeated Ridgefield. The quality win tiebreaker also could not be used, as the three teams won and lost to the same teams.

The third-place team was thus chosen by a random draw, with the Ridgefield Tigers winding up as the No. 3 seed. Darien then took the No. 4 seed based on its win over New Canaan this season, with New Canaan as the No. 5 seed.

Westhill finished 11-5 and is the No. 6 seed.

Ludlowe is 9-6 and will be the No. 7 seed. The Falcons have one match remaining against Stamford on Tuesday, but even with a loss, they cannot drop in the standings because they own the tiebreaker with Wilton. Wilton, which is 9-7, is the No. 8 seed.
