Bill Martin, the head coach of New Canaan boys cross country team, has been asked by outsiders several times about his top runner this season.

For those not in the know: Meet Andrew Malling.

“Andrew is surprising people but he’s not surprising me because I know his work ethic,” Martin said. “He’s a known factor to us. I’m just basking in everybody else asking me ‘Who is that kid?’, which is fantastic.”

Malling was far and away the top runner in Monday’s cross country meet in Waveny Park, winning with a time of 16:41.60 over 5,000 meters, and outdistancing the nearest competition by more than 40 seconds.

It’s the Ram senior co-captain’s second dual meet victory of the season, and helped New Canaan go 3-0 at the meet for a 5-1 overall record.
