Danbury’s Jack wins wrestling tournament

The high school wrestling season is still more than a month away, but Danbury High School junior Ryan Jack is already in championship form.

Wrestling out of Empire Wrestling Academy in Somers, N.Y., Jack won the 125-pound championship at the Journeymen Fall Classic tournament, held last weekend at the Union College Memorial Fieldhouse in Schenectady, N.Y., and he beat some high-ranking opponents to do so.

“I knew it was going to be a hard tournament,” said Jack, the reigning New England champion at 120 pounds and a two-time high school All-American. “I had to prepare well and work on the things I needed to work on.”

Westhill, McMahon boys soccer battle to 1-1 tie

STAMFORD — Too many balls in the air. Too many hard-fought battles in the midfield. Too few scoring chances on net.

It all added up to the Westhill High School and McMahon High boys soccer teams finishing in a 1-1 tie Wednesday at the Vikings’ field.

The deadlock left both sides at 4-4-3 in the FCIAC and at least five points on the outside of the FCIAC playoff picture. The Vikings and Senators each have five contests left in the regular season.

FAIRFIELD — The three-time defending Class L girls soccer winner got rolling Tuesday night at Taft Field. The defending FCIAC champion had its offense clicking.

And that comes at quite a time for St. Joseph.

Jessica Mazo scored two goals and two others had a goal and an assist apiece to lead the Cadets to a 5-0 win at Fairfield Ludlowe.

“We came together pretty well. We really executed and came out with energy,” Mazo said. “We came out to play.”

Second-half surge leads Trumbull past Warde

TRUMBULL — Pele would have been proud.

A two-goal Trumbull lead had just been sliced to one and the momentum was on the side of the Warde Mustangs. It was still anyone’s game, a game crucial to the FCIAC standings, but Trumbull’s Skylar Jorge changed everything with a play for the ages.

Stationed at the right side of the field, about 20 yards out and with her back to the goal, Jorge took control the ball and then sent a bicycle kick over her head and it ended up floating just over the outstretched hands of Warde keeper Maura Dougherty, a goal that not only restored the Eagles two-goal cushion but drove Trumbull to an eventual 4-1 win over the Mustangs Tuesday night.

“It was right after they (Warde) scored and I just thought, why not try to hit it and it ended up working,” Jorge said. “I made pretty good contact with the ball and I turned around and saw it going in and I was just so surprised.”

Ridgefield, Staples battle to tie

RIDGEFIELD — As far as regular-season soccer games are concerned, they don’t get much bigger than Tuesday afternoon’s battle between unbeaten Staples and unbeaten Ridgefield.

And as far as scoreless ties go, they don’t get any more entertaining than said clash, which was a rematch of last year’s Class LL state championship match.

Both teams’ senior goalkeepers were flat-out sensational, with Zoe Barnett making seven saves for Staples (9-0-3) and Lauren Castle making five saves for Ridgefield (10-0-1), which has not surrendered a goal this season.

“Every game, for every season that I’ve been here, the goal is to keep the zero,” Castle said, “because if you don’t get scored on, you can’t lose.”
