Clash of the champions

TRUMBULL — Believing the cliché you have to beat the best in order to be the best is nothing groundbreaking in sports.

It is rare however, to see a matchup where both teams have that same belief about each other.

And, in this instance, both have a point.

GameTimeCT No. 1 St. Joseph dominated then-No. 1 New Canaan at home in its opener to the tune of 28-0, while No. 3 Darien has won the last three Class LL titles and has outscored its opponents 65-6 through two games.

The two heavyweights will do battle Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.

Papp is Norwalk’s next big man on campus

NORWALK — Everybody at Norwalk High looks up to Sam Papp, and not just because he stands 6-foot-5 and weighs in at a strong and athletic 255 pounds.

No, it runs deeper than that. Far deeper, in fact.

Once, when he was far smaller than he is now, Papp was occasionally picked on due to a stutter. Since becoming the man-child he is today, he protects those who might fall prey to the bullying of others.

FOOTBALL: Stamford and Trinity Catholic seek first win

The city football game between Trinity Catholic and Stamford High could not be coming at a better time for the two schools.

Both teams come in at 0-2 having lost week one games they both felt were winnable and both getting blown out in their week two contests.

Now they get to face each other in the first leg of the Stamford city championship with a chance to erase the bad taste left by the first two weeks.

Of course, while one team will pick up its first victory, the other will walk off Gaglio Field Saturday afternoon at 0-3.

Greenwich field hockey bounces back

Despite falling to a strong Mamaroneck (N.Y.) squad on Saturday, the Greenwich High School girls field hockey team exhibited some positive signs, which it carried over into its next game against Trumbull.

“We lost 3-0 to Mamaroneck, but the game was much closer than the score indicated,” Cardinals coach Ally Orrico said. “We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities, but we did create opportunities for ourselves.”

Greenwich continued to create scoring chances during its road game against Trumbull on Monday night and this time, it lit the scoreboard.

Receiving scoring from four different players, the Cardinals raised their record to 3-2 with a 4-1 win over host Trumbull in an FCIAC matchup. Greenwich is in action again against a formidable Staples squad on Friday at 4 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Kriftcher named next boys basketball coach at Trinity Catholic

Trinity Catholic did not have to look far for its new head boys basketball coach.

Brian Kriftcher has been on the Trinity Catholic bench for the past two seasons as an assistant to renowned head coach Mike Walsh. On Tuesday the school announced Kriftcher would be taking over for Walsh, who stepped down earlier this year.

Kriftcher will become Trinity’s first new head coach in 40 years, taking over a program steeped in tradition and championships.

“This is a great opportunity to build on a strong foundation here at Trinity. We are not starting from scratch but this is an opportunity to make it my own,” Kriftcher said. “I think since I have been here for two years I have some credibility with the players. They know what to expect from me and I know about them as players and as people.”
