BOYS SOCCER: Stamford rallies for win over Darien

STAMFORD—The Stamford boys soccer team was treading water, down two goals at halftime to Darien.

The life preserver came from an usual place as Stamford took advantage of two miscues by the Darien keeper and defense in the second half, rallying for three goals in the final 40 minutes and a surprising 4-3 win.

Kenly Lalanne scored all four Stamford goals, tallying three in the second half.

“I think this was pretty good. That has been our M.O. from the start of the year, playing much better in the second half,” Stamford coach Mario Caminiti said. “Today, we did not start out mentally ready. Our pregame warmup had me very concerned because we were not really focused. We talked about it at halftime and I told them I was depending on their leadership to fix it and they did it.”

High School football: Danbury, Malachi Hopkins overpower Westhill

STAMFORD — Danbury quarterback Malachi Hopkins ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Hatters gained 515 rushing yards Saturday in a 52-20 win at Westhill.

Hopkins ran 16 times for 184 yards and completed 5 of 11 passes for 67 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown to his older brother, R.J., who also ran for a touchdown. Running back Jack Pompea scored twice while gaining 120 yards on 16 carries and Malik Thomas also found the end zone on an 83-yard afternoon.

Westhill had some success setting the edge and containing sweep plays but couldn’t find an answer for Malachi Hopkins when he pulled the ball on the option and ran it himself. Hatters coach Augie Tieri called Hopkins “the focal point of our run game.”

FOOTBALL: Stamford defeats rival Trinity for first win

STAMFORD — The game plan for the Stamford High football team was simple.

Ground and pound.

Sticking largely to the running game, Stamford ran to a 19-7 win over rival Trinity Catholic Saturday afternoon.

All the points in the game came in the second half.

“The game plan was run first. Our receivers are a little mad about it, but we felt like we were a little bigger than them and we felt we would be run first and ground and pound today,” Stamford coach Jamar Greene said. “We knew we had the counter in our back pocket. We tried to run it late in the third quarter but messed up the snap, but we saw it was still going to be there. We knew it would hit. We didn’t know it would be for a touchdown, but we knew it would be for big yardage.”
