Staples rolls past McMahon for 3-0 start

WESTPORT — Jake Thaw threw three touchdown passes and Staples scored on its own kickoff Friday night as the Wreckers cruised past McMahon 38-14 on homecoming Friday night.

McMahon scored its first points of the season in the second quarter on a Jermayne Daniel plunge and briefly led, 8-7, but Staples hit the easy button the rest of the way while improving to 3-0.

Ludlowe volleyball holds off Stamford in 5 to stay unbeaten

STAMFORD—In FCIAC Girls Volleyball, five-game thrillers are no surprise.

Battling to the bitter end speaks to the league’s high standing in the state as well as to the balance of many of the teams.

Ludlowe High and Stamford High had such a duel Friday at SHS’ Paul Kuczo Gym.

And the statement after the final point was crystal clear. Beware of Ludlowe. Be very aware.

The Falcons posted a 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 22-25, 15-8 road victory to remain unbeaten this season. Ludlowe (5-0, 4-0 FCIAC) are atop the FCIAC East Division.

“We were a young team last year. We are still a young team,” said Ludlowe’s veteran coach Meghan Skelton. “But the core of this 2018 squad are returnees.”

TRUMBULL — Believing the cliché you have to beat the best in order to be the best is nothing groundbreaking in sports.

It is rare however, to see a matchup where both teams have that same belief about each other.

And, in this instance, both have a point.

GameTimeCT No. 1 St. Joseph dominated then-No. 1 New Canaan at home in its opener to the tune of 28-0, while No. 3 Darien has won the last three Class LL titles and has outscored its opponents 65-6 through two games.

The two heavyweights will do battle Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.

NORWALK — Everybody at Norwalk High looks up to Sam Papp, and not just because he stands 6-foot-5 and weighs in at a strong and athletic 255 pounds.

No, it runs deeper than that. Far deeper, in fact.

Once, when he was far smaller than he is now, Papp was occasionally picked on due to a stutter. Since becoming the man-child he is today, he protects those who might fall prey to the bullying of others.

FOOTBALL: Stamford and Trinity Catholic seek first win

The city football game between Trinity Catholic and Stamford High could not be coming at a better time for the two schools.

Both teams come in at 0-2 having lost week one games they both felt were winnable and both getting blown out in their week two contests.

Now they get to face each other in the first leg of the Stamford city championship with a chance to erase the bad taste left by the first two weeks.

Of course, while one team will pick up its first victory, the other will walk off Gaglio Field Saturday afternoon at 0-3.
