FCIAC state tournament scoreboard: New Canaan, Greenwich repeat as CIAC champions

The Greenwich Cardinals and New Canaan Rams  captured repeat CIAC championships in dominating performances Saturday at Veteran’s Stadium in New Britain.

New Canaan won its fourth straight state championship with a 34-13 victory over Cheshire in the Class L final. The Rams finished the season 13-0 and have been ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT Top 10 Poll since the preseason.

Greenwich romped over Southington 45-6 for its second straight championship and third title in four seasons. The Cardinals finished the season 11-2 and were No. 6 in the GameTimeCT Top 10 Poll heading into the playoffs.

Semifinals: New Canaan defeated the Hartford co-op 43-6 in Monday’s Class L semifinals. The Rams will face Cheshire in the Class L final at 2 p.m., Saturday.

Greenwich defeated Fairfield Prep 31-10 in the Class LL semifinals, and the Cardinals will face Southington in the Class LL final at 5:30 p.m., Saturday.

The other three FCIAC teams in the semifinals, Ridgefield, Wilton and St. Joseph, all lost their games.

Ridgefield dropped a 21-0 decision to Cheshire in Class L; Wilton lost to Bunnell 21-20 in Class MM; and St. Joseph fell to Brookfield 6-3 in Class M, a game which was a rematch of last year’s Class M final, won by St. Joseph

Semifinals: The FCIAC has five teams playing in the CIAC football tournament semifinals on Monday, Dec. 8.

In Class LL, defending champ Greenwich is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2 Fairfield Prep at Rafferty Stadium in Fairfield at 6 p.m.

New Canaan and Ridgefield are playing in the two Class L semifinals. New Canaan, the three-time defending Class L champ and No. 1 seed, hosts the No. 4 seed Hartford co-op at 3:30 p.m., with No. 7 Ridgefield playing at No. 3 Cheshire at 6:30 p.m.

Wilton, the No. 2 seed in Class MM, hosts No. 3 Bunnell at 4:30 p.m.

In Class M, defending champion St. Joseph, the No. 1 seed, is facing No. 5 Brookfield at Derby HS at 3:30 p.m. This is a rematch of last year’s Class M final, won by St. Joseph 21-20.

FCIAC teams went 5-4 in the quarterfinals with two of the losses coming in head-to-head matchups of league teams.
